The web of life
An ECOSYSTEM is a community of living things and their surroundings, and this word search gathers how it works. You'll track down the roles every living thing plays β the PRODUCER that makes food, the CONSUMER that eats it, the DECOMPOSER that recycles it, and the PREDATOR and PREY in the FOOD CHAIN.
Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so nature changes every time you play β gentle on Easy, and a Hard-mode habitat once the diagonals and backwards words appear.
Biomes big and small
Ecosystems come in every size, and the words are here. Explore the great BIOMEs β the FOREST, the WETLAND, the TUNDRA, the SAVANNA and the CORAL REEF β and learn how ENERGY and NUTRIENTS flow through a FOOD WEB. There's the HABITAT each SPECIES calls home, the NICHE it fills, the POPULATION and COMMUNITY it belongs to, and the ADAPTATION that helps it survive.
Everything is connected
Almost all the ENERGY in an ecosystem starts with the Sun. A PRODUCER β usually a green plant β captures sunlight to make its own food, a CONSUMER eats the plant (or eats other consumers), and when anything dies a DECOMPOSER like a fungus or bacteria breaks it down, returning NUTRIENTS to the soil for plants to use again. Link these together and you get a FOOD CHAIN; weave many chains together and you get a FOOD WEB.
The big lesson of ecology is that everything is connected. Remove just one SPECIES β say a PREDATOR β and the whole web can wobble, as its PREY suddenly booms and eats too much of something else. Living things survive in their HABITAT thanks to ADAPTATION, special features that suit them to where they live, from a polar bear's thick fur to a cactus's water-storing stem. Zoom right out and these habitats group into giant BIOMEs like the FOREST, TUNDRA and CORAL REEF.
Great for a habitats topic
It pairs perfectly with a lesson on habitats, food chains and biomes β Easy mode keeps the grid small with no diagonals or reverse words. Play online, print a PDF pack, or use our Make Your Own tool to build a grid from your own ecosystem words.
Frequently asked questions
What's in the ecosystems word search?
The web of life β producers, consumers and decomposers, predators and prey, food chains and food webs, plus biomes like the forest, tundra and coral reef. Each puzzle uses a fresh mix.
Does it explain food chains?
It does β the PRODUCER, CONSUMER and DECOMPOSER roles, PREDATOR and PREY, and the FOOD CHAIN and FOOD WEB that link them.
Is it good for a habitats or living-things topic?
Great fit β pair it with a lesson on habitats and biomes like the FOREST, TUNDRA and CORAL REEF. Easy mode keeps the grid small with no diagonals or reverse words.
