Changing from one state to another

There's the rare SUBLIME change from solid straight to gas, the FROZEN and the FLOW, and the way VOLUME and shape CHANGE along the way.
It's all about the particles
The secret to the states of MATTER is how the tiny PARTICLEs inside are arranged. In a SOLID they're packed tightly in a fixed pattern, only able to vibrate on the spot, so a solid keeps its shape. In a LIQUID they're still close together but can slide past one another, which is why a liquid can FLOW and take the shape of its container. In a GAS they break free and zoom around with lots of space between them, spreading out to fill any room.
Adding HEAT gives the particles more energy, which is what drives the changes — MELTING, BOILING and EVAPORATE on the way up, FREEZING and CONDENSE on the way back down. Water is the perfect everyday example, since we meet all three of its states without even trying: ICE, liquid water and STEAM. The fourth state, PLASMA, is rarer on Earth but the most common in the universe — it's what stars and lightning are made of.
