Behind the lens, in one grid
Photography is part art, part science, and this word search gathers the language of both. You'll be finding the gear โ CAMERA, LENS and TRIPOD โ the settings that make a shot, from APERTURE and SHUTTER to EXPOSURE, and the kinds of pictures you take, from a PORTRAIT to a quick SELFIE.
Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the shoot changes every time you play โ gentle on Easy, and a longer-word challenge once the diagonals and backwards words appear on Hard.
Gear, settings and shots in the grid
The grid covers a whole camera bag. There's the gear โ the CAMERA, LENS, TRIPOD, FLASH and the FILTER you screw on front โ and the controls that shape every shot: the APERTURE, SHUTTER, ZOOM, FOCUS and EXPOSURE, framed in the VIEWFINDER. Then there are the kinds of picture โ a PORTRAIT, a SELFIE, a close-up MACRO, a distant TELEPHOTO or a quick SNAPSHOT โ and the old darkroom world of the NEGATIVE, before digital PIXELs and a phone ALBUM.
How a camera catches light
The word 'photography' actually means 'drawing with light', and that's exactly what a camera does. Light passes through the LENS, and two settings control how much gets in: the APERTURE (a hole that opens wider or narrower, like the pupil of your eye) and the SHUTTER (which snaps open for a split second). Together they set the EXPOSURE โ too much light and the photo is too bright, too little and it's too dark. A fast shutter freezes a sprinting footballer; a slow one blurs a moving car into streaks.
Photography has changed astonishingly fast. For over a century, photos were captured on film and developed in a pitch-black DARKROOM from a NEGATIVE; today a phone records the same light as millions of tiny PIXELs in an instant, and almost every child is now a photographer. Yet the art is still the same โ choosing your SUBJECT, the LIGHTING and the FRAME to tell a story in one picture. That blend of art and technology makes photography a great cross-curricular media topic.
