The secret is the special PEN: a flat metal NIB (or a soft BRUSH) makes a thick line on the down-STROKE and a thin one on the up-stroke, which gives calligraphy its graceful, flowing look. Holding the pen at a steady SLANT and pressing just right takes lots of PRACTICE.
For most of history, beautiful handwriting really mattered. Before the printing press, monks spent years copying entire books by hand onto PARCHMENT and VELLUM, decorating them with gold and gorgeous LETTERING — some of those illuminated manuscripts still survive today. Calligraphy is treasured around the world, from elegant Western SCRIPT to the brush characters of Chinese and Japanese writing and the flowing curves of Arabic.
