The hedgehog built to take on Mario
SONIC was created in 1991 for one very specific job: to give SEGA a mascot cool and fast enough to rival Nintendo's Mario. The designers picked a HEDGEHOG because it could curl into a ball to attack, painted him BLUE to match Sega's logo, and gave him attitude and trainers to feel rebellious next to the cheerful PLUMBER. Where a Mario game was about careful jumping, a Sonic game was about pure SPEED — looping the LOOP and rocketing through each ZONE.
That clever golden-RING idea is part of why Sonic stuck around. Instead of dying from a single hit, Sonic just scatters his rings and gets a frantic moment to grab some back — a forgiving system that kept the action fast and fun. The 'console wars' between Sonic and Mario in the early 90s became one of gaming's most famous rivalries, and Sonic has since raced on into dozens of games and hit films.
