A slice of history from Naples
Modern pizza was born in Naples, in southern Italy, where bakers topped flatbreads with tomatoes and cheese. The famous MARGHERITA is said to be named after Queen Margherita of Italy in 1889 — its tomato, mozzarella and basil matching the red, white and green of the Italian flag.
Italian immigrants carried pizza to the United States, where it grew into a global favourite with thicker crusts, bolder toppings and the much-argued-about pineapple. Today it's one of the most popular foods on Earth, eaten everywhere from sit-down restaurants to a slice grabbed on the go.
