What makes a fruit a fruit?
Here's a fact that surprises a lot of people: to a scientist, a fruit is the part of a plant that grows from the flower and holds the seeds. That means the TOMATO, and even the CUCUMBER, are technically fruits — while we usually treat them as vegetables in the kitchen. A BANANA is botanically a berry, but a STRAWBERRY isn't one at all.
Fruits also grow in lots of different ways. Tree fruits like the APPLE, PEAR, PEACH and CHERRY grow in orchards; citrus fruits like the ORANGE, LEMON, LIME and GRAPEFRUIT love warm climates; the GRAPE grows on vines; and tropical fruits like the MANGO, PINEAPPLE and COCONUT need year-round heat.

Fruit is packed with vitamins, fibre and natural sugars — the bright orange and yellow ones are often full of vitamin C — which is why doctors suggest aiming for 'five a day'. That makes this a brilliant classroom theme, slotting neatly into lessons on healthy eating and where food comes from.
