Religion is one of the oldest and most important parts of human life — most people in the world today follow a faith, and the major religions each have hundreds of millions or even billions of followers. They differ in many ways, but most share some common threads: a sense of something sacred, sacred writings, special places to gather, festivals through the year, and teachings about how to live a good and kind life. Learning about them is really learning about people.
Spotting how faiths connect is fascinating. Several began in the same part of the world and share figures and stories; ideas like KARMA (that our actions have consequences) appear in more than one Eastern religion; and almost every faith has a holy book, a place of WORSHIP and the idea of a PILGRIM travelling to a sacred site. World religions is a core part of RE precisely because understanding and respecting different beliefs helps people get along — making this a thoughtful, even-handed topic, whether as an introduction or an end-of-unit revision round.
