Mesopotamian Mythology Word Search

The world's oldest myths β€” our Mesopotamian mythology word search hides the gods and legends of ancient Sumer and Babylon in a grid of letters, from the hero GILGAMESH to the storm god MARDUK. Pick a difficulty and explore.

The oldest stories ever told

Mesopotamia gave the world some of its very first myths, written on clay thousands of years ago, and this puzzle gathers them. You'll be finding the great hero GILGAMESH, the champion god MARDUK, the sea-dragon TIAMAT, and the powerful goddess ISHTAR, also known as INANNA.

Because every new puzzle reshuffles the legends, no two Mesopotamian mythology word searches are the same. One round a backwards ERESHKIGAL hides in a corner; the next a diagonal ANUNNAKI appears across the middle.

Gods of Sumer and Babylon

The gods of Mesopotamia ruled the sky, earth and underworld, and the words are here. There's the wise ENKI, the air god ENLIL, the sun god SHAMASH (also called UTU), the moon god SIN, the storm god ADAD, and the mother goddess NINHURSAG. The whole family of gods were the ANUNNAKI, born from APSU. In the underworld ruled ERESHKIGAL and NERGAL, while the shepherd DUMUZI, the monster HUMBABA and the creature KINGU all play their part β€” and the LAMASSU guarded the gates. Many of these tales were pressed onto a clay TABLET beside a great ZIGGURAT.

It's a great fit for a mythology or ancient-history topic. Tracking down G-I-L-G-A-M-E-S-H turns spelling practice into the world's oldest legend.

How to play

Drag across a word, or click its first and last letter β€” both work. Each word you spot locks in with its own colour and ticks off the list, so you always know what's left to find.
