A world held up by a tree
The Norse imagined the whole universe as nine worlds held in the branches and roots of one giant ash tree, YGGDRASIL — with the gods' home ASGARD up high and our world, MIDGARD, in the middle. Brave warriors who died in battle were carried by a VALKYRIE to VALHALLA, ODIN's great hall, to feast and fight until the end of the world. ODIN himself gave up an eye for wisdom, and THOR's hammer MJOLNIR was so heavy only he could lift it.
What makes Norse myth unusual is that even the gods knew they were doomed. RAGNAROK is a prophesied final battle in which gods and monsters fall and the world is destroyed — before being reborn.
