Survivors of the in-between world
A ROCKPOOL is one of the toughest places to live, because twice a day the TIDE turns it from sea into a little puddle and back again. Between tides the water heats up in the sun, rain can make it less salty, and waves crash in — so every creature here is a survival specialist. The LIMPET clamps onto a rock so hard you can barely prise it off, the BARNACLE seals itself shut to keep from drying out, and the ANEMONE pulls in its waving tentacles and becomes a harmless blob until the sea returns.
The pools are full of clever tricks. A hermit CRAB doesn't grow its own SHELL — it borrows an empty one and swaps up as it grows; a STARFISH can regrow a lost arm; and a SEA URCHIN is covered in protective spines. The SEAWEED and KELP aren't plants exactly but algae, giving smaller creatures shade and somewhere to hide.
