Hidden life by the sea
When the TIDE goes out, it leaves little ROCKPOOL worlds full of life, and this word search gathers them. You'll be finding the scuttling CRAB, the waving ANEMONE, the SHELL-covered creatures clinging to the ROCKS, and the bright STARFISH tucked among the SEAWEED.
Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the shore changes every time you play — gentle on Easy, and a fuller day of rock pooling once the diagonals and backwards words appear on Hard.
Clinging, scuttling and waving
Each rock pool is packed with clever creatures, and the words are here. The LIMPET and the BARNACLE cling tight to the rock, the MUSSEL, COCKLE and WHELK hide in their shells, and the spiny URCHIN and the PERIWINKLE wait for the tide. A SHRIMP and a PRAWN dart through the water, a small SNAIL grazes the SPONGE and KELP, and a smooth PEBBLE makes the perfect perch — all in a sheltered COVE by the sea.
Survivors of the in-between world
A ROCKPOOL is one of the toughest places to live, because twice a day the TIDE turns it from sea into a little puddle and back again. Between tides the water heats up in the sun, rain can make it less salty, and waves crash in — so every creature here is a survival specialist. The LIMPET clamps onto a rock so hard you can barely prise it off, the BARNACLE seals itself shut to keep from drying out, and the ANEMONE pulls in its waving tentacles and becomes a harmless blob until the sea returns.
The pools are full of clever tricks. A hermit CRAB doesn't grow its own SHELL — it borrows an empty one and swaps up as it grows; a STARFISH can regrow a lost arm; and a SEA URCHIN is covered in protective spines. The SEAWEED and KELP aren't plants exactly but algae, giving smaller creatures shade and somewhere to hide. Best of all, rock pooling is real science you can do with your own eyes — just look, don't grab, and pop everything back where you found it. It makes a perfect nature or seaside topic.
