Big eaters and long sleepers
Bears are the heavyweights of the meat-eating world, but most are happy omnivores that eat whatever the season offers — BERRIES, roots, fish and HONEY as much as meat. The GRIZZLY is famous for standing in rivers to snatch leaping SALMON, while the giant PANDA went the other way entirely, living almost only on bamboo and having to munch for up to 12 hours a day because it's such poor fuel. The POLAR BEAR is the exception: a true hunter of seals on the Arctic ice.
The most famous bear trick is the long winter sleep. When food runs short, many bears HIBERNATE in a DEN or CAVE, living off the fat they built up in autumn — their heartbeat slows right down and they can go for months without eating, drinking or waking. Mother bears even give birth to their tiny CUB during this winter sleep. All these habits make bears a brilliant topic for a lesson on habitats, hibernation and food chains.
