Every bear on Earth
There are only eight kinds of bear in the world, and this word search hides them all. You'll be tracking the huge GRIZZLY and BROWN BEAR, the snow-white POLAR BEAR, the familiar BLACK BEAR, and the bamboo-loving PANDA β plus the giant KODIAK, the biggest of them all.
Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the woods, so the line-up changes every time you play β gentle on Easy, and a Hard-mode woodland trek once the diagonals and backwards words appear (a SUN BEAR may climb in backwards).
Bear life and bear habits
Bears do more than look fierce, so we've hidden the words that go with them. Look for what they do β HIBERNATE through winter in a cosy DEN or CAVE, raise a tiny CUB, GROWL a warning, and use those huge PAWS and CLAWS β and what they love to eat, from HONEY and BERRIES to a fresh-caught SALMON. There's the smallest, the SUN BEAR, the shaggy SLOTH BEAR, and the rare SPECTACLED bear, the only one from South America, all wrapped in thick FUR.
Big eaters and long sleepers
Bears are the heavyweights of the meat-eating world, but most are happy omnivores that eat whatever the season offers β BERRIES, roots, fish and HONEY as much as meat. The GRIZZLY is famous for standing in rivers to snatch leaping SALMON, while the giant PANDA went the other way entirely, living almost only on bamboo and having to munch for up to 12 hours a day because it's such poor fuel. The POLAR BEAR is the exception: a true hunter of seals on the Arctic ice.
The most famous bear trick is the long winter sleep. When food runs short, many bears HIBERNATE in a DEN or CAVE, living off the fat they built up in autumn β their heartbeat slows right down and they can go for months without eating, drinking or waking. Mother bears even give birth to their tiny CUB during this winter sleep. All these habits make bears a brilliant topic for a lesson on habitats, hibernation and food chains.
